Bathroom and Kitchen
Plumbing in Rustenburg

Bathroom and kitchen plumbing in Rustenburg starts with the water, because it is not the same everywhere. The municipality's own works measured calcium from 3.67 mg/l at Kloof to 99.2 mg/l at Bospoort, so taps and shower heads are picked for easy cleaning. A shower leaking into a wall starts with leak detection.

Describe your bathroom or kitchen job

A repair, a new fitting or a full renovation. A plumber phones you back to talk it through.

Your details are used only to arrange this call-out (POPIA).

Request received

A plumber will phone you on the number you gave to confirm the visit. If water is running, close the main stopcock at the meter while you wait.

Behind the tiles, a renovation is mostly pipes and valves

Each one can be done on its own or as part of a renovation.

  • Bathroom renovations

Supply and waste pipes moved or renewed in the walls and floor, pressure-tested, then left for the tiler. Fittings go on after the tiles.

  • Toilet replacement

The old pan comes out, the floor outlet is checked, and the new pan is sealed with its cistern set to flush fully. The supply gets its own isolating valve.

  • Mixers and taps

Basin, bath, shower and kitchen mixers fitted with a valve ahead of each, so a worn cartridge can be swapped later without shutting off the house.

  • Showers leaking into walls

The mixer, the pipe, the waste and the sealant are checked in turn before a tile comes off. See leak detection for hidden leaks.

  • Sinks and appliance points

Kitchen sinks, waste traps, dishwashers and washing machines connected, each with its own valve and a waste that falls to the drain.

  • Scale and grit in fittings

Aerators, shower heads and toilet inlet valves cleaned or replaced when the flow drops. Often a fitting needs cleaning, not replacing.

Rustenburg's tap water is not one water

Rustenburg's drinking water comes from its own Kloof and Bospoort treatment works, and in bulk from Rand Water and Magalies Water. Those sources do not send out the same water. The municipality's Annual Report for 2024/25 publishes what its own two works measured over the year, and the gap between them is wide.

Treated water at Bospoort measured calcium of 54.7 to 99.2 mg/l and magnesium of 23.3 to 51.9 mg/l. At Kloof, which is fed by the Dorpspruit from springs in the Magaliesberg, calcium was 3.67 to 20.30 mg/l. Kloof is a small, old works, though, and the municipality says it supplies only about 2% of total demand.

No hardness figure is published for any of Rustenburg's supply systems, so there is no honest single number for "Rustenburg water". What the tap results do show is grit. Turbidity compliance in the municipality's tap samples fell to 66.7% in April 2025 and 62.5% in May 2025, before recovering to 100% in June.

Both reach your fittings. Water with more calcium leaves scale where it is heated or where it dries: on shower-head nozzles, in tap aerators and inside mixer cartridges. Grit after an outage lodges in the same small openings, and in the inlet valves of toilets, so a bathroom or kitchen here should be fitted with parts that can be cleaned and swapped rather than thrown away.

In practice, choose shower heads with soft nozzles you can rub clean, and taps whose aerator unscrews by hand or with the key supplied. Choose mixers whose cartridge is sold as a spare part. Then have an isolating valve fitted ahead of each fitting, so a cartridge or a toilet inlet valve can be changed without turning off the whole house.

Before you buy a mixer or shower head, check two things: that the cartridge is sold on its own, and that the aerator or nozzles can be cleaned without tools. Then ask for an isolating valve on every fitting.

Rules that keep a new bathroom dry

They deal with what goes wrong most often once the tiles are down.

  1. Labour and parts priced apart

The call-out fee is given when the plumber phones you. The written quote puts labour and every fitting on separate lines, so you can compare a tap's price with the shop's.

  2. Pressure-tested before tiling

New pipes in a wall or floor are tested under pressure before they are covered. You can see the gauge hold before the tiler starts.

  3. A valve for every fitting

Each toilet, basin, sink and mixer gets its own isolating valve, so one repair later does not mean a dry house.

  4. Fittings that can be serviced

Mixers with replaceable cartridges, and aerators and shower heads you can clean, are recommended over sealed units. The choice stays yours.

How a bathroom or kitchen job runs

Fill in the form and a plumber phones you to talk through the job and arrange a visit to measure up.

What you do

  1. Send the call-out form

Say whether it is a repair, a replacement or a renovation, and which room it is in.

  2. Talk it through

On the call, mention the fittings you have in mind and whether a tiler or builder is involved.

  3. Choose the fittings

Buy them yourself or ask for them on the quote. Keep the boxes and the instructions for the plumber.

What the plumber does

  1. Look and measure

Existing pipes, valves, waste routes and the main stopcock are checked before anything is priced.

  2. Quote in writing

Labour, fittings and any making good, each on its own line, before work starts.

  3. First fix

Supply and waste pipes run in the walls and floor, then pressure-tested before the tiler closes up.

  4. Second fix

Toilet, basin, mixers and shower fitted after tiling, each with an isolating valve.

  5. Test and hand over

Each fitting is run and its joints checked for drips. The invoice lists what was fitted and where.

Questions about bathroom and kitchen jobs

Something else to ask? Note it in the call-back form and the plumber covers it when they ring.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in South Africa?

The plumbing is one part of the bill, and its price depends on how much moves. People on MyBroadband report paying R4,995 to redo shower pipes in a wall in Cape Town, with the tiler extra, and a shower-floor quote of R5,870 that covered a flat fee, four hours of labour, the tiler and materials. Job estimates on Procompare for Rustenburg in 2026 put toilet and shower repairs at R2,800. Your plumbing work is quoted in writing after a site visit, and the call-out fee is given on the phone first.

What does it cost to have a toilet swapped out in Rustenburg?

It depends mostly on the toilet you choose, and on what turns up when the old one comes off, such as a cracked floor outlet or a seized supply valve. PlumberFinder lists Rustenburg hourly rates of R360 to R700 and standard call-outs of R270 to R530 for 2026. The price for your swap is written down before the old pan is lifted.

My shower is leaking into the wall. Do you have to break the tiles?

Not always. A leak behind a shower is often the waste, the sealant around the tray or a mixer seal, and those are fixed without breaking a tile. If the pipe inside the wall is leaking, it is found first, the opening is kept to the tiles over it, and its size is agreed before anything is cut. See leak detection for how hidden leaks are found.

Who supplies the taps and fittings, me or the plumber?

Either works. If you buy them, check they suit the job: a mixer rated for your water pressure, a toilet whose outlet lines up with the floor pipe, and a cartridge you can buy on its own later. If the plumber supplies them, each item is priced on its own line so you can compare. Keep the boxes and receipts either way, because makers ask for proof of purchase on a warranty claim.

Will the plumber be on site while the tiler works?

Not the whole time, because the plumbing is done in two visits. The pipes go in first and are pressure-tested before the tiler covers them, and the toilet, basin and mixers go on once the tiles are done. Tell the plumber who is tiling and when, so both visits fit around the tiler's dates.

What does a new kitchen mixer tap cost to fit?

Most of the cost is the mixer itself, and prices for those range widely. Fitting it is a short job if the isolating valves under the sink still work. If they are seized or missing, new ones go in at the same time and appear on the quote, which you get in writing before the old tap comes off.

Can you move my washing machine inlet and outlet?

Yes. A washing machine needs a cold supply with its own tap, and a waste that runs to a drain with enough fall, usually through a standpipe with a trap. Moving them means running a new supply and a new waste to the new spot, through a wall or under the floor. The route, and any chasing of walls, is agreed and priced before work starts.

What warranty do I get if the shower or toilet leaks after the job?

Ask for the workmanship terms in writing on the quote, before work starts, so you know what is covered and for how long. Fittings carry the maker's own warranty, which can depend on them being installed to the instructions, so those are followed and you keep the paperwork. The best protection is a test you can see: pipes pressure-tested before they are covered, and each fitting run and checked for drips at handover.
