Every service, in Kroondal and the smallholdings around it

Pumps, tanks and septic lines first, then the rest, each explained for Rustenburg.

In Kroondal, the water and the sewage are often yours

Rustenburg's development plan lists Kroondal among the areas "that do not have bulk sewer services" and still use septic tanks, along with Donkerhoek, Rietvlei and Olifantsnek. Many smallholdings around it also draw from boreholes. On those properties the whole system, from the pump to the soakaway, belongs to the owner.

That system runs on electricity, and the supply out here has been unreliable. In January 2024 AfriForum took legal action over power supply in the Rustenburg area, describing outages of 36 to 48 hours after failures on the 33 kV ring feed. Smallholders at Waagfontein and the Altkroondal retirement home were left without water because their borehole pumps stopped, and equipment "simply does not last", the complaint said.

A pump that loses power is the lucky case. Lost phases and repeated stopping and starting are harder on motors and pressure switches, and a pump that keeps running after its supply of water has gone burns out quickly.

The plumbing side of the answer is well understood. A storage tank between the borehole and the house carries you through a long outage. A pressure vessel sized to the pump stops it switching on for every glass of water. A non-return valve and dry-run protection keep the pump primed and stop it running empty. Phase protection on the motor is an electrician's job, and worth asking for.

Septic systems need the same planning. The drain line from the house needs the right fall and an access point, roof water must stay out of the tank, and a line that keeps backing up should be looked at with a camera before anyone digs.

If your water comes from a borehole, put a storage tank in front of the house. When the power fails, the tank still has water in it.

Kroondal is a mission village on the N4

Kroondal lies about 9 km south-east of Rustenburg on the N4 and the R104. It grew from the farm Kronendal and a Hermannsburg Lutheran mission, was surveyed as a settlement in 1889, and still has its German-speaking community and the Deutsche Schule Kroondal.

Sibanye-Stillwater's Kroondal mine lies to the east. Between the village and town are the Waterkloof smallholdings and estates such as Waterkloof Hill and Hex River Village.

Plumbing questions from Kroondal

Ask your own in the call-back form.

What does a pump or borehole call-out cost in Kroondal?

Kroondal is about 9 km from town, so travel may be part of the call-out fee, which you are told on the phone. Pump faults are priced after the test: a pressure switch or a non-return valve costs far less than a new pump, and you get the quote in writing first.

Why does my borehole pump keep switching on and off?

Usually a pressure vessel that has lost its air charge or is too small for the pump, or a leak somewhere in the system. Rapid cycling wears out the pump and the switch, so it is worth having checked.

How do I protect my pump when the power keeps failing?

Fit dry-run protection so it cannot run empty, a non-return valve to hold its prime, and a storage tank so the house has water while the power is off. Ask an electrician about phase failure protection for the motor.

My septic tank smells and the drains are slow. What now?

A full tank or a blocked line to it. If the tank was emptied recently, the blockage is probably in the line, which is cleared and checked with a camera. Keep roof water and chemicals out of the system.

Can you install a new line from the borehole to the house?

Yes. The line is laid deep enough to protect it, pressure tested before it is covered, and fitted with isolating valves so a fault can be shut off without stopping the whole property.

Do you work on the Waterkloof smallholdings and estates?

Yes. Waterkloof, the estates along the Hex River and the smallholdings between town and Kroondal are covered.
