Water Pressure Repairs
in Rustenburg

Water pressure repairs in Rustenburg start at the tap nearest your meter, because low pressure can begin in the street or in the house. If that tap is strong, your stopcock, pressure reducing valve and geyser valves are tested before any pipe is blamed. For a high bill, see leak detection.

Fixes for weak pressure on your side of the meter

If the tap at the meter is strong and the house is weak, the cause is usually one of these.

  • Stopcock not fully open

After an outage or a repair, the main stopcock is easily left half closed. It is the first thing checked, and fixing it costs nothing.

  • Pressure reducing valve

Grit from the network clogs the PRV strainer and starves the house. The strainer is cleaned, and the valve replaced only if it no longer holds its setting.

  • Aerators and shower heads

Silt loosened by an outage lodges in the smallest openings first. Unscrewing and rinsing them often brings the flow straight back.

  • Only the hot side is weak

Usually the geyser's pressure control valve, its inlet strainer or a half-shut isolating valve. Faults in the cylinder go to geyser repair.

  • Corroded or undersized pipes

Old galvanised pipe narrows inside as it rusts, and a small pipe feeding a big house cannot carry enough. Pipes are tested last, because replacing them costs far more than a valve.

  • Tank and booster pump

For outages and night shutoffs, a tank stores water and a booster pump gives it pressure. The pump needs a dry-run cut-out so it stops when the tank is empty.

Rustenburg's pressure drops because demand outruns supply

The main cause of low water pressure in Rustenburg is on the municipal side: there is not enough water for the demand. The municipality's own IDP puts average supply at 134.68 megalitres a day against an average demand of 223.08. When a network is asked for more than it receives, reservoirs run down and pressure falls first at the far ends of the system and on higher ground. After a visit in May 2023, the national Department of Water and Sanitation put it plainly: "High lying areas do not have water due to low pressure in the system, and this is caused by high demands during summer."

The department did not say which suburbs it meant. The ground is easy to measure, though. Satellite elevation data (SRTM) puts the CBD at about 1,165 m above sea level, while Cashan, on the foothills of the Magaliesberg, has a median of about 1,318 m and reaches about 1,425 m. Waterfall East, despite its name, sits on the plain at about 1,151 m, slightly lower than the CBD.

Supply notices show where the shortfall lands. In December 2024 the municipality warned of "lower inflow and pressure in the Barnardsvlei system", the Rand Water supply into the town's reservoirs, and listed the areas each reservoir feeds (see the file). During repairs at the Vaalkop plant in January 2024, residents were warned that "recovery time may take up to 48 hours after supply has been fully restored". Weak, spluttering taps for a day or two after the water comes back are the network refilling, not a fault in your house.

Pressure is also managed inside the network, with valves that divide the town into zones. In October 2024 a ward councillor said: "Many fire hydrants are opened to release pressure due to faulty zonal valves, spilling millions of litres of water." So the pressure in a street can change for reasons that have nothing to do with the houses on it. None of that can be fixed from your side of the meter, and no part in your house should be sold to you as the cure.

Here is how to tell whose problem it is. Run the outside tap nearest the meter, usually at the front of the property, and compare it with a tap inside. If the tap at the meter is weak too, and the neighbours say the same, the pressure is low in the street and the municipality is the place to report it. If the tap at the meter is strong but the house is weak, the cause is on your side, and the six fixes above show where it usually is.

Test the tap at the meter before anything else. Weak there usually means the street; strong there and weak indoors means a valve, a strainer or a pipe on your side.

Which reservoir your suburb drinks from

The two December 2024 supply notices name the reservoir behind each area. Ground height is measured from satellite elevation data, because height decides how fast a reservoir dip reaches your taps.

Rules before any pressure work is quoted

Weak pressure is easy to oversell, because a worn valve and a failing pipe feel the same in the shower. These rules keep the fix the size of the fault.

  1. Measured at the meter

Pressure is checked at the tap by the meter and again inside the house, so you see the numbers that decide whose problem it is.

  2. Valves before pipes

Stopcock, strainers, the PRV and the geyser valves are checked before anyone suggests opening a wall. A re-pipe is quoted only for a section that has been tested and has failed.

  3. Told straight when it is the street

If the pressure is low at the meter, you are told so and shown how to report it. Nothing in your house is replaced to fix a problem in the street.

  4. The cost on paper first

The call-out fee is given to you on the phone. After the test, parts and labour are written down line by line before work starts.

How a water pressure call-out works

It starts at the meter, because that one reading decides whose problem it is.

What you do

  1. Send the call-out form

Say whether the whole house is weak or only the hot water or one tap, and whether the neighbours have the same.

  2. Try the tap at the meter

Run the outside tap nearest the meter and tell the plumber whether it is strong or weak.

  3. Clear the way

Make sure the meter box, the main stopcock and the geyser can all be reached.

What the plumber does

  1. Measure at the meter

Pressure and flow at the tap nearest the meter, to settle which side of the meter the problem is on.

  2. Measure inside

The same check at a cold tap, a hot tap and the furthest shower.

  3. Check the valves

Stopcock, PRV and its strainer, the geyser's pressure control valve and the isolating valves.

  4. Explain and price

The cause shown to you, with a written price for the fix, before a part is changed.

  5. Fix and measure again

Repair done, then the same taps measured again so you can see the difference.

Water pressure questions from Rustenburg households

How much does it cost to install a pressure pump?

It depends on the pump size, whether a tank is needed and how far the pipes and power have to run, so it is priced after the visit. Plumbing directories for Rustenburg show labour rates of about R360 to R900 an hour in 2026, with the pump, tank and fittings on top. The call-out fee is given to you when the plumber phones, and the full price is written down, item by item, before anything is installed. If the pressure is low only because a valve is blocked, you may not need a pump at all.

Why is my hot water pressure low but the cold is fine?

Because the problem is on the hot side, which usually means the geyser's valves. The pressure control valve may be failing or rated low, its strainer may be full of grit, or an isolating valve near the geyser may be half closed. A low-pressure geyser also gives weaker hot water by design. Each valve is tested, and only the one that has failed is replaced.

Why did my water pressure drop all of a sudden?

If the whole street dropped at once, it is most likely the supply: an outage, a burst main or restrictions, and a municipal notice warns that recovery can take up to 48 hours after the water returns. If only your house dropped, look for a stopcock someone closed, a PRV strainer blocked by grit from the last outage, or a burst pipe on your property. A meter that keeps turning while your taps are closed points to the burst.

Is the low pressure in my street a Rustenburg municipal problem or my pipes?

Test the outside tap nearest your meter to find out. If it is weak too and your neighbours have the same problem, it is the municipal supply, and the regulator has blamed low pressure in Rustenburg on high demand in summer. If the tap at the meter is strong but the taps in the house are weak, the cause is on your side of the meter and can be fixed.

Do I need a booster pump for my JoJo tank?

Usually, yes, unless the tank stands high enough above the house to feed it by gravity. A tank on the ground gives almost no pressure on its own, so a booster pump is needed to run showers and the geyser properly. The pump should have a dry-run cut-out so it stops when the tank is empty, and a bypass so the house can still take mains water when the pump is off. More on tanks is under plumbing installation.

Why is my water pressure low after a new geyser was installed?

Usually because of how it was set up rather than the geyser itself. Check that the isolating valves were opened fully, that the pressure control valve suits the geyser's rating, and that the strainer was not blocked by debris during the work. If a low-pressure model replaced a high-pressure one, the hot water will be weaker by design. The fix is often an adjustment rather than a new part.

What is the hammering noise in my pipes when a tap shuts?

That is water hammer: fast-moving water stops suddenly at the closing tap, and the shock runs back along the pipe. It is worse when the pressure is high and the pipes are not clipped firmly. A pressure reducing valve set to the right level, proper pipe clips and, where needed, a small arrestor near the tap usually stop it. Left alone, the shock can loosen joints and start leaks.

Which areas of Rustenburg get low water pressure?

No official list names them, but the notices show where low pressure has been warned of. The December 2024 Barnardsvlei notice cited "lower inflow and pressure" and listed the areas fed by the Cashan, Stokkiesdraai, Boschdal and Booster reservoirs, from Cashan, Protea Park and Waterfall East to part of the CBD, East End and Zinniaville. On the Magalies Water side, the January 2024 Vaalkop repair notice warned of "reduced water pressure or even a complete water outage" in areas including Geelhoutpark, Tlhabane, Rustenburg North, the Boitekong extensions and Freedom Park. The regulator's 2023 remark about "high lying areas" named no suburbs, but the ground rises from about 1,165 m in the CBD to a median of about 1,318 m in Cashan, while Waterfall East is on the plain at about 1,151 m (SRTM). For the south side, see plumber Cashan.
