Emergency Plumber
in Rustenburg

An emergency plumber in Rustenburg fixes your side of the water meter, and that side cannot wait in the municipal queue. The first minutes are yours: main stopcock closed, geyser off at its isolator, power kept away from water. Send the form next, and a plumber phones you. For a burst geyser, see geyser repair.

Six plumbing emergencies and the first valve to close for each

What you shut off before the plumber arrives decides how far the water gets.

  • Burst pipe

Close the main stopcock at the meter. The burst is then found, cut out and joined, and the line is held under pressure before the water goes back on.

  • Burst geyser

Switch the geyser off at its isolator and close the stopcock on its cold inlet. If the cylinder has split, see geyser installation.

  • Water through the ceiling

Leave the light switches in that room alone and switch off at the board if the board is dry. The source is traced above the ceiling before any board is cut.

  • No water at all

Check a neighbour's tap first: if the street is dry too, it is a supply problem. If only your house is dry, the stopcock, meter and pipes on your side are checked.

  • Toilet or sewage overflowing

Stop flushing and close the small stop valve behind the cistern. A blockage inside your property is a job for drain unblocking.

  • Leak at the water meter

A leak before the meter, or a stolen meter, is the municipality's: phone 014 590 3111 and choose option 3. A leak after the meter is yours, and it turns your meter while it runs.

The street side is the municipality's. Your side of the meter is yours.

Rustenburg Local Municipality looks after the water network up to your meter. Its IDP describes dedicated teams that replace and repair pipe and meter leaks reported through the municipal call centre. That number is 014 590 3111: option 3 is for emergencies and disasters, option 2 for customer care. A burst in the street, a leaking connection or a stolen meter goes there first.

Reporting a leak is not the same as having it fixed. The Department of Water and Sanitation's No Drop 2023 report gave Rustenburg 54%, one of only two North West water services authorities above 50%. It found that leak repairs were proven, "but an insufficient number of repairs were completed in the 48-hour response time".

Parts are part of the delay. In November 2022 a ward councillor said a burst in East End could not be repaired "due to unavailable spare parts", until community members bought the parts themselves and water came back for about 3,000 residents. In October 2024 another councillor said a shortage of clamps, stop valves and water meters meant many leaks could not be fixed promptly.

None of that queue applies to your side of the meter. Everything from the meter to your taps is yours: the pipe across the yard, the geyser in the roof, every valve and toilet cistern. Water lost there passes through your meter and into your ceilings, so what you do in the first few minutes counts for more than how fast anyone arrives.

Close the main stopcock at the meter by turning it clockwise. For a geyser, switch off its isolator and close the stopcock on its cold inlet. Where water reaches a light fitting or a plug, switch off at the distribution board only if you can stand on a dry floor to do it, and photograph the damage for your insurer before you mop. Then send the call-out form: it reaches a plumber, who phones you back to arrange the visit.

Find the stopcock at your water meter today and check that it turns. If it is seized, have an isolating valve fitted on your side of the meter, so a burst can be shut off without waiting for anyone.

Rules that hold when water is everywhere

An emergency is when a bill is hardest to question, so none of these is skipped.

  1. Safe first, priced second

Water and power are isolated as soon as the plumber is on site. The repair is then priced in writing, and you decide before it starts.

  2. Found before anything is cut

The leak is traced before a ceiling board, wall or paving is opened. You hear where the opening will be, and how big, beforehand.

  3. Your side or the street's, said plainly

A street-side fault belongs to the municipality, so you get its call-centre number rather than a bill. You are not quoted for work on the municipality's pipe.

  4. Photos before the mop

The damage, the failed fitting and the meter reading are photographed for your insurer. The burst section is kept for the assessor.

How an emergency call-out works

The form goes to a plumber, who phones you back. Close the water off while you wait.

What you do

  1. Send the call-out form

Choose the closest problem, such as Burst pipe or Water through the ceiling, and give a number you will answer.

  2. Shut off and stay dry

Main stopcock closed, geyser isolator off, and no light switches touched where water is coming through.

  3. Take the call-back

You hear the call-out fee and when the visit can be. Ask your questions then, before anyone drives out.

What the plumber does

  1. Phone you back

Ask what is leaking and whether the water is off, and talk you through the stopcock if it is not.

  2. Isolate on arrival

Water and power off where they meet, and the damage photographed as it was found.

  3. Find the source

Trace the leak and check whether it sits on your side of the meter or the street's.

  4. Quote, then repair

A written price for the repair. Work starts once you agree to it.

  5. Test and hand over

Water back on under pressure, the meter watched for movement, and an itemised invoice with the photos.

Emergency plumbing questions from Rustenburg

Something else on your mind? Ask it in the call-back form and the plumber answers when they phone.

How much is an emergency call out for a plumber in Rustenburg?

Rustenburg plumbing directories list emergency call-outs of roughly R550 to R1,350 in 2026, depending on the platform and the hour. Snupit lists after-hours work at 50% more, and PlumberFinder lists R710 to R1,350 for after hours and weekends. The call-out fee for your job is told to you on the phone before anyone drives out, and the repair is priced in writing before it starts. More figures are on the plumbing prices page.

My geyser burst at night, what do I do while I wait for the plumber?

Switch the geyser off at its isolator or at the distribution board, then close the stopcock on the cold pipe going into the geyser. Open a hot tap in the house to let the pressure off. Put buckets under the drips, move what you can, and photograph the ceiling and the geyser before anything is cleaned up. Phone your insurer for a claim number, then send the call-out form.

Where is my main water shut-off, and should I close it?

It is usually a stopcock beside the water meter, in the meter box near your front boundary, and it closes when you turn it clockwise. Close it for any burst pipe or leak you cannot stop with a smaller valve. For a leaking geyser alone, the stopcock on the geyser's cold inlet is enough. If the main stopcock is seized or missing, ask for an isolating valve to be fitted on your side of the meter.

Water is coming through my ceiling light. Is it safe to switch anything on?

No. Leave that light switch alone and keep out of any water under the fitting. If the distribution board is dry and you can reach it from a dry floor, switch off the main switch; if not, stay out of the room. Then close the main stopcock or the geyser stopcock to stop the water. Have an electrician check the circuit before the power goes back on.

Do you come out on Sundays and public holidays?

That is confirmed when the plumber phones you back, together with any after-hours rate, because it depends on who is available that day. Rather than print a promise that might not hold on a given Sunday, the answer comes on the phone. Send the form anyway: you will know where you stand on that call, and the stopcock steps on this page work on any day.

How fast can a plumber get to Tlhabane, Cashan, Waterfall East or Geelhoutpark?

The plumber tells you when they phone back, because it depends on the hour and on where the plumber is at the time. All four suburbs lie within about 4 km of the CBD in a straight line, but no arrival time is promised on this page. While you wait, close the stopcock at the meter: it stops the damage sooner than any van can.

Our water meter was stolen and water is running down the street. Can a plumber stop it tonight?

Report it to the municipality first, on 014 590 3111, option 3, and write down the reference number: the meter and the pipe feeding it belong to the municipality. If the stopcock in the meter box is still there, closing it stops the flow. Stolen meters are a known problem here, and the municipality names them among the targets of its War on Leaks campaign. If water is also leaking on your side of the meter, send the call-out form, because that part is a plumber's job.

Will I pay the full call-out if the problem isn't fixed on the first visit?

The call-out fee is paid once for that visit, because it covers coming out and finding the fault, and you hear what it includes on the phone before anyone drives out. If a part must be fetched or ordered, the written quote says so, and says whether the return visit costs anything, before you agree. You are not charged for work you did not agree to.
