Storage, septic lines and the rest, each explained for Rustenburg.

Phokeng is still waiting for its reservoir

Much of Phokeng's water travels a long way. Rustenburg's development plan describes Rand Water's V1 pipeline feeding the upper Tlhabane reservoir, "from which water is pumped" to supply the areas around the Royal Bafokeng Nation. A second pipeline, V2, is reduced to supply Ga-Luka and the Impala Platinum mine.

A bigger answer has been under construction for years. The Pilanesberg scheme's second phase "will provide 70 ML/day to the Tlhabane Reservoir, which will subsequently supply both the Tlhabane and Phokeng settlements", according to the same plan. The SABC reported in April 2024 that the Mafenya reservoir was complete, the Tlhabane reservoir more than 75% built, and the cost above R900 million. In 2026 an opposition statement and a visit by the deputy minister of water and sanitation both raised that the new reservoir was still not delivering.

In the meantime Phokeng feels every dip upstream. On 28 September 2026 a power failure at Rand Water's Zuikerbosch and Lethabo pump stations needed four extra hours to recover, and the notice named the Royal Bafokeng Administration among the customers that "may experience reduced water pressure or complete interruptions".

There is a second difference. The municipality lists the villages under the Royal Bafokeng Nation among the areas still using septic tanks, with no bulk sewer. A septic system works differently from a town sewer: wipes, fats and strong chemicals upset it, rainwater overloads it, and a blockage can sit between the house and the tank where nobody is looking.

So a Phokeng house is best set up for both. A storage tank with a pump that cannot run dry carries the house through a supply dip. The drain line to the septic tank needs the right fall, an access point and a check with a camera if it keeps backing up.

Know where your septic tank and its access lid are, and keep roof water out of it. Most septic trouble starts with something that should never have gone in.

Phokeng is the capital of the Royal Bafokeng Nation

Phokeng is the capital of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, about 15 km north-west of Rustenburg by road along the R565 towards Sun City. Its name is usually given as "place of dew". It had about 34,600 people at the 2011 Census, with Luka a few kilometres further north.

The Royal Bafokeng Stadium, a 2010 World Cup venue, is here, along with Lebone II College and the Royal Bafokeng Institute. The drive into Rustenburg takes about a quarter of an hour.

Plumbing questions from Phokeng

Ask your own in the call-back form.

Does a plumber charge extra to come out to Phokeng?

Phokeng is about 15 km from the town centre, so travel may be part of the call-out fee. You are told the full call-out fee on the phone before the visit is booked, so there is no surprise at the gate.

What should never go into a septic tank?

Wet wipes, sanitary products, cooking fat, paint and strong drain chemicals. Wipes and fat block the line, and chemicals kill the bacteria that make the tank work. Rainwater from gutters should not go in either.

My drain backs up but the tank is not full. What is wrong?

The blockage is probably in the line between the house and the tank: roots, a dip, or a broken section. It is cleared and then looked at with a camera so the cause is found.

Is a water tank worth it in Phokeng?

If your supply drops when Rand Water has a problem upstream, yes. A tank fitted with a pump and a non-return valve keeps the house running until the supply comes back, and refills on its own afterwards.

Can you install a new geyser in a house on a septic system?

Yes. A geyser does not change how the septic works, but the drip tray and overflow must drain outside, not into the septic line.

Do you work in Luka and the villages towards Sun City?

Luka and the villages around Phokeng are covered. For places further out towards Sun City and the Pilanesberg, put the village in the form and you will get a straight answer.
