Gas Geyser Installation
in Rustenburg
Gas geyser installation in Rustenburg makes sense in a town where a quarter of homes already cook with gas and Stage 6 load-shedding is a recent memory. Ask to see the gas installer’s SAQCC Gas card before anything is connected. For electric or solar, see geyser installation.

A gas water heater is more than the heater
The water side is plumbing. The gas side must be done by a registered installer.
-
Gas geyser installation
An instant gas water heater mounted on a wall, heating water only while a hot tap is open.
-
Flue and ventilation
Burnt gas has to leave the building. The flue route and the air supply are planned before the unit goes on the wall.
-
The cylinder outside
The LPG cylinder stands outside on a level base, with a regulator and a copper line through the wall. The LPGSA says 48 kg cylinders are typically stored outdoors.
-
Water flow and pressure
A gas geyser needs enough flow to light its burner. The flow at your taps is measured before a unit is chosen.
-
Gas backup for solar
A gas unit after a solar geyser tops up the temperature on cloudy days, provided its maker allows pre-heated water in.
-
Leak test and certificate
Every gas joint is tested for leaks before the unit is lit. The law requires the installer who connects the gas to issue a Certificate of Compliance.
A quarter of Rustenburg homes already cook with gas
In Census 2022, 50,620 households in Rustenburg Local Municipality used gas as their main energy for cooking. That is 24.9% of households, against 141,827 (69.6%) that cooked mainly on mains electricity. The figures are in the municipality's IDP Review 2026/27.
The power supply is the other half of the picture. In February 2025 the municipality said it was "required and expected to implement stage 6 loadshedding", during what it described as widespread outages throughout the town. For a household that already cooks on a gas hob, heating water with gas as well is a natural next question.
Gas is pressure equipment, and the rules for it are national. The LPG Safety Association (LPGSA) says all LPG installations must be carried out by a registered installer who holds the relevant certification from SAQCC Gas, and that installer must issue a Certificate of Compliance. LPG falls under the Pressure Equipment Regulations of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the SANS 10087 series, and 48 kg cylinders are typically stored outdoors.
For your house, that makes a gas geyser two jobs. The water side (cold in, hot out, valves and pressure) is plumbing. The gas side (cylinder, regulator, copper line, the connection to the unit and its flue) belongs to an installer registered with SAQCC Gas, and that is the person who signs the certificate. Before anyone connects gas, ask to see their SAQCC Gas card and check that the name on it matches the person in front of you.
A gas geyser also runs differently from an electric one. It heats water only while a hot tap is open, so there is no tank to keep hot, and a model with battery ignition keeps working when the power is off. A fan-assisted model needs mains power, so ask which type you are being quoted. Either way, the cylinder spot, the flue route and your water pressure are checked before a unit is chosen.
Ask to see the SAQCC Gas card before any gas is connected. Keep the final payment back until the Certificate of Compliance is in your hand and its owner's section has been explained to you.

What to expect on a gas geyser installation
A gas installation is only as safe as its last test, so these are part of every job.
The card before the connection
Only a registered gas installer may make the gas connection. Ask for the card and check the name on it before work begins.
A quote from cylinder to tap
The unit, flue, regulator, copper gas line and water connections are each priced. Nothing is bought until you agree.
Tested before it is lit
Every gas joint is leak-tested before the burner is lit, and the water connections are checked for drips under pressure.
Shown how to live with it
You are shown how to close the cylinder valve, what to do if you smell gas and how to relight the unit. The owner's section of the certificate is gone through with you.
How a gas geyser installation works
The form starts it. A plumber phones you back, and nothing is connected until the quote is agreed.
What you do
- Send the call-out form
Say whether you already use gas, and how many showers may run at once.
- Think about the cylinder
Look for a level spot outside, clear of drains and windows, where a cylinder can stand.
- Ask to see the card
Before gas is connected, ask the installer for their SAQCC Gas card.
What the plumber does
- Phone and visit
Talk through your hot water use, then look at the wall, the flue route and the cylinder spot.
- Measure the flow
Check the flow and pressure at your taps so the unit chosen will light and hold its temperature.
- Quote in writing
Unit, flue, gas line, regulator and plumbing, each on its own line.
- Install and connect
The water side plumbed in. The gas side may only be connected by an SAQCC Gas registered installer, as the regulations require.
- Test and hand over
Leak test, hot water checked at every tap, the certificate the law requires, and a walk-through.

How much does it cost to install a gas geyser in South Africa?
It varies widely with the unit and the work, going by what people report. On MyBroadband, one member paid R4,500 for a 16 litre unit installed and another about R12,000 for a 20 litre-a-minute fan-assisted unit (both in 2015). A 2023 post put the gas installer's pipes, fittings and CoC at about R5,000, with about R2,000 more for the plumbing. Your price is written down line by line, from the cylinder to the tap, before anything is bought.
How much is a gas CoC, and who issues it?
It is issued by the installer who connects the gas, who must be registered with SAQCC Gas, according to the LPG Safety Association. In one 2023 MyBroadband post the certificate was part of a bill of about R5,000 for the gas pipes, fittings and CoC together. Ask for the CoC to be its own line on the quote, so you know what it costs.
How long does it take to get my gas CoC after installation?
It can be completed as soon as the installation has passed its tests, so agree before work starts that you receive it when the job is done. One MyBroadband member was still waiting after three weeks in 2022. Keep the final payment back until the certificate is in your hand and the owner's section has been explained.
Can a gas geyser be installed inside the bathroom?
Only if the room, the flue and the ventilation meet SANS 10087, which is strict about bathrooms. A gas water heater burns air and gives off exhaust gases, so the code controls where it may go and how it is flued and ventilated. An outside wall is the simplest place for one. If you want it indoors, the registered installer must show you that your room qualifies.
What size gas geyser do I need for a family of four?
That depends on how many hot taps run at the same time, because gas geysers are sized by flow in litres a minute rather than by tank size. Units of 16, 18 and 20 litres a minute come up in MyBroadband posts by people who bought them. A unit that is too small gives hot water at one shower and lukewarm water at two. The installer works out the size from your shower heads and taps.
Why does my gas geyser go cold when two taps are open?
Because the flow has gone past what the burner can heat. Each unit can only warm so many litres a minute, so with two taps open both run lukewarm. Low water pressure causes a similar problem, because the unit needs enough flow to keep its burner lit. A bigger unit or better pressure solves it; see water pressure repairs.
Can I run my solar geyser through a gas geyser as a backup?
Yes, if the gas unit's maker allows pre-heated water at its inlet. A unit not made for it can overheat water that the sun has already warmed, so a tempering valve on the outlet is fitted to keep tap temperatures safe. Ask for the model and its inlet limit to be named on the quote. For the solar side, see solar geyser installation.
Do I need a plumber or a registered gas installer for a gas geyser?
You need both kinds of work. The water connections are plumbing, but the gas connection is made by the registered gas installer, who also issues the Certificate of Compliance. One person can hold both skills. Whoever connects the gas, ask to see their SAQCC Gas card.
