Drain Unblocking
in Rustenburg
Drain unblocking in Rustenburg starts by finding out whether the blockage is in your pipe or in the municipal sewer. The municipality itself says its old clay and asbestos sewers cause a high volume of blockages. If yours keeps coming back, a drain camera inspection finds the cause before anyone blames roots.
Request a call-out
Report a blocked drain
Say which drain is blocked and where the water is backing up. A plumber rings you to book a time.
A drain clears according to what is blocking it
Where the water backs up tells you roughly where to look.
-
Kitchen sink and fat
Fat sets in the trap and the first metres of pipe. It is cleared with rods or a drain machine, then flushed through with hot water.
-
Blocked toilets
Usually wipes or sanitary products, or too little water behind the flush. Cleared from the pan or from the next inspection eye along.
-
Slow showers and baths
Hair and soap build up in the trap and the first bend. Often a short job that needs no machine at all.
-
Overflowing gully
The outside gully is the lowest opening on most properties, so it is the first place a blockage further down shows itself.
-
The line to the street
Roots, a dropped joint or settled waste in the pipe to the municipal connection. Cleared with the method that suits the pipe and the blockage.
-
Drains that keep blocking
A drain that blocks again within weeks has a fault in the pipe, not just a build-up. See drain camera inspection.
Rustenburg's old clay sewers block, in the municipality's own words
Rustenburg Local Municipality does not hide it. Its IDP for 2025/26, and the Budget Speech of May 2025, say the sewer network "still has old clay and asbestos pipes which results into a high volume of sewer blockages". The same passage says networks in low-cost housing areas are strained by the number of backyard dwellings and illegal connections.
Clay pipe is laid in short lengths, and every joint between them is a weak point. Roots work their way in where two lengths meet. A joint that drops when the ground moves leaves a lip that catches paper and fat, and once a pipe cracks, soil gets in and the flow slows further.
Water restrictions make it worse, because a sewer needs a steady flow to carry waste along. The municipality's 2024/25 Annual Report says the Boitekong works missed its target partly because of "intermittent flow due to water restrictions: there is no water at night", and that Lethabong saw "extremely low inflow volumes, due to numerous sewer blockages". Rain brings the opposite problem: at the Monakato works the same report points to "high inflows possibly caused by excessive storm water ingress".
The same conditions reach the drains on your property. When the taps are dry at night, waste settles in the pipe instead of washing through, and a joint with roots or a lip catches it first. After rain, a gully with a broken surround lets stormwater into the line, and the lowest opening overflows. Fat is the other big cause, which is why the municipality runs a permit system to limit what food outlets send down the sewer (see commercial plumbing).
So a drain that blocks again and again has a reason, and that reason is found before anyone blames roots or a broken pipe. Your drains are yours up to the point where they join the municipal sewer. If the street manhole is overflowing too, or the neighbours are blocked, the fault is in the municipal sewer, and paying to clear your own line will not fix it.
If two houses on the same line are blocked at once, check whether the nearest street manhole is overflowing before you call anyone. If it is, report it to the municipal call centre first.

How a drain call-out is handled
Each one answers a complaint that comes up again and again in reviews of drain work.
A price before the rods go in
The call-out fee is told to you on the phone. Once the plumber has seen where the blockage is, you get the price for clearing it before any work starts.
Whose pipe it is, said plainly
If the blockage is in the municipal sewer, you are told so and shown why, so you do not pay to clear a line that will fill again.
Causes seen, not guessed
Roots or a broken pipe are only named once they have been seen. A drain that keeps blocking gets a camera before it gets a diagnosis.
Flow checked before you pay
After clearing, water is run from the highest fitting on the line. You watch it drain away before the invoice is written.
How a blocked drain call-out works
Send the form, take the call back, and the drain gets looked at.
What you do
- Send the call-out form
Say which drain is blocked and whether anything else in the house is draining slowly too.
- Take the call
The plumber asks where water is backing up and whether the neighbours have the same problem, then books a time.
- Stop the water
Hold off on flushing and running water into that drain until it is cleared. If you know where the gully and inspection eyes are, have them uncovered.
What the plumber does
- Find the blockage
The gully and inspection eyes are opened to see which section is full and which is empty.
- Say whose it is
If the street manhole is full, the blockage is municipal, and you are told before anything is charged.
- Price it
The cost of clearing it, in writing, before work starts.
- Clear the line
Rods, a cable machine or water jetting, picked for the pipe and what is in it.
- Flush and invoice
Water run through from the furthest fitting, the gully cleaned, and an invoice that names what was found.

What does drain unblocking cost in Rustenburg?
Job estimates for drain unblocking in Rustenburg on Procompare in 2026 sit at R1,200, R1,500 and R1,800, and the same site lists hourly rates of R400 to R900. What you pay comes down to how far down the line the blockage sits and how much work it takes to shift it. The call-out fee is given to you on the phone, and the price for clearing the drain is written down before the rods go in. See plumbing prices for what else people report paying.
Why does my drain keep blocking?
A drain that blocks again soon after it was cleared usually has a fault in the pipe: roots at a joint, a joint that has dropped and catches waste, or a cracked section. Clearing it only removes what got caught. A drain camera inspection shows which fault it is. In Rustenburg, nights with no water can also leave waste lying in the pipe, so blockages can follow a run of outages.
How long is a drain unblocking guaranteed?
Any guarantee on the work is written on the quote before the job starts, so you know what it covers. A guarantee is only worth something when the cause was found. If the rods bring back roots, or the pipe is broken, you are told before you pay that clearing it buys time until the pipe is repaired.
Is the blocked sewer my problem or the municipality's?
Your drains are yours up to the point where they join the municipal sewer, and everything past that point is the municipality's. If the street manhole is overflowing, or neighbours on the same line are blocked too, the fault is probably in the municipal sewer. Report that to the municipal call centre on 014 590 3111 (option 2 for Customer Care, option 3 for Emergency and Disaster). If only your house is affected, the blockage is most likely on your side.
Why does my house smell like sewage after rain?
Usually because rainwater has got into the sewer and pushed sewer air, or sewage, back up through the lowest openings. The municipality's 2024/25 Annual Report links high inflows at its Monakato works to "excessive storm water ingress", and a private line can suffer the same thing on a small scale. On a property, the usual ways in are a gully with a broken surround, a missing inspection-eye cover or a downpipe that empties into a sewer gully. A dry trap in a shower or floor drain nobody uses lets the smell in too, and running water into it fixes that.
Should I pour drain cleaner or pool acid down before calling a plumber?
No. Chemical drain cleaners rarely shift a solid blockage, and they sit in the pipe until somebody has to put rods or hands into it. Pool acid attacks metal traps and fittings, and mixed with other cleaners it can give off a toxic gas. If you have already poured something in, say so on the call so the plumber knows before opening the drain.
Why does my toilet keep blocking?
Most often something that should not be flushed, such as wipes or sanitary products, is lodged in the pan or the pipe behind it. A low-flush cistern, or one that has not refilled properly after the water was off, may not push waste far enough along the pipe. If the toilet blocks while the other drains run freely, the fault is in the pan or its connector. If several fittings back up together, the blockage is further down the line.
Will a drain machine or high-pressure water damage my old pipes?
It can, if the pipe is already cracked or a joint has moved, which is why the method is chosen for the pipe and not the other way round. Old clay lines are cleared with a head sized for the pipe, at a pressure it can take. Where a line looks damaged, a camera inspection first is the safer order.
