What a call-out and repairs cost
Tlhabane's old mains are being replaced around you
A large share of Rustenburg's water network is old asbestos-cement pipe: 778 km of 1,477 km, according to the municipality's own plan. Tlhabane is where some of it is being dug up. The 2025 budget speech lists Tlhabane Water Pipe Phase 2, worth R55.4 million, laying 3 km of 450 mm and 4.8 km of 250 mm uPVC pipe for greater Tlhabane, wards 9, 10, 11 and 13, with a separate R58.4 million sewer pipe phase for wards 10, 11 and 13.
Tlhabane draws from several reservoirs. The December 2024 Magalies notice put Tlhabane Extension 3 (Bester) on the Tlhabane Upper Reservoir, Extension 1, Oukasie and FoxLake on the Lower Reservoir, and Tlhabane West from 24th to 58th Avenue on the Bellevue Reservoir. In October 2019, upper Tlhabane West went dry when the pump feeding the Geelhout side broke down.
The municipality also names Tlhabane in its War on Leaks campaign, aimed at the areas "severely affected by pipe bursts, leaks, stolen meters, and faulty meters". That is the street side. Everything from the meter to your taps is yours to look after.
New mains are good news, but connecting them means shutting sections down and filling them again, and every refill pushes air and loose silt towards the houses. A meter that has been disturbed, a stopcock that has not been turned in years, or an old yard pipe that was already weak can start leaking afterwards.
So when work has been done in your street, it pays to check your side: read the meter with every tap closed, look for wet patches between the meter and the house, and open an outside tap until the water runs clear before using the geyser.
After any mains work in your street, close every tap and watch the meter for ten minutes. If it moves, there is a leak on your side.
Tlhabane runs along Swartruggens Road
Tlhabane lies about 4 km north-west of the town centre along Swartruggens Road, the R104. It had about 50,000 people at the 2011 Census across Units 1, 2 and 3 and Tlhabane West, where the ground rises westward to about 1,290 m.
Netcare Ferncrest Hospital and the Tlhabane Community Health Centre are here, with Tlhabane Square on Collen Modise Drive as the main shopping centre. Geelhoutpark borders it to the south, and the R565 leads on to Phokeng.
Plumbing questions from Tlhabane
Ask your own in the call-back form.
What does a plumber cost in Tlhabane?
Tlhabane is a short drive from the centre, so it is priced like the rest of town. Rustenburg directories list hourly plumbing rates of roughly R360 to R900 in 2026. You are told the call-out fee on the phone, and get a written price before work starts.
My meter is leaking. Is that me or the municipality?
The meter and everything on the street side of it belong to the municipality, so report a leaking meter to 014 590 3111. A leak on the house side of the meter, including your stopcock and yard pipe, is yours and a plumber can fix it.
Why did my water bill go up after the pipe work in our street?
Possibly a leak on your side that started when the supply was shut down and recharged, or air moving the meter as the pipes refilled. Close every tap and watch the meter. If it keeps turning, a hidden leak needs finding.
Our water was off for the new pipes. Is it safe to use the geyser?
Run an outside cold tap until the water is clear first, so the silt goes out of the garden tap and not into the geyser. If the geyser was off, switch it on once water is flowing normally.
Can you replace the old pipe between my meter and the house?
Yes. The run is traced, the new pipe is laid and pressure tested before the trench is closed, and you get the price in writing first.
Do you come to Tlhabane West and Oukasie?
Yes, every part of Tlhabane is covered, along with Geelhoutpark next door and Phokeng further along the R565.
